Be Careful of Computer Pop Up Alerts
Recently, we have received several reports of customers being scammed after receiving a software pop up alert on their computer.
HERE'S HOW THE SCAM WORKS
The pop up indicates that there is a problem with their computer. After calling the number that appears on the screen with the alert, a supposed technician states that they have a malware virus on their computer and talks them through keying information into their computer to give them access to fix the problem. They are then informed that there are fraudulent transactions posted to their account and that they should log into their internet banking to verify their activity. Meanwhile, the fraudsters download a copy of everything the customer has on their computer, which includes tax and other confidential information.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
If you receive a software pop up alert with a phone number to call, please do not call the number on the screen. Instead, please contact a trusted IT technician. And as always, if you have questions about your SFB account, please call 888-254-0615 or stop in our office. We will never call you asking you for confidential banking information over the phone.
